Mission
To empower children to get directly involved in building a sustainable, greener and kinder future through gardening projects aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The problem that this Programme aims to solve
Increasing globalisation and demographic changes are creating an inequitable future, threats to the planet and challenges to food security. The World Garden Schools Programme teaches children about Culture, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion through gardening, namely through growing food and plants that support the planet.
How this Programme will be delivered
The breadth and scope of the participation will be discussed and arranged between the Founder and the school. This would include site assessment, size of plot, number of participants and budget.
Each school will be assigned a local facilitator who has deep knowledge of indigenous plants in the country where the school is based. The facilitator, if required, could provide seedlings and plug plants (by agreement).
The general curriculum is available free on the World Garden Schools website (www.worldgardenschools.org) and is aligned to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/).
In addition to the free curriculum, each school in the programme will receive:
- Introduction to Permaculture (delivered via Teams or Zoom);
- Planning for the first session (see below);
- Hands-on session with the local facilitator (where students get involved in the planting);
- Troubleshooting/help and support in the first months;
- Global meet-ups at the end of each cycle (three cycles a year);
- Participation in meetings discussing key issues of the modern world and promoting ethical practices (e.g. Buy Local, Think Seasonal).
